When democracy was imprisoned

The Prime Minister said in his message that during the Emergency, Indira Gandhi’s government put the democratic system of the country on hold. Freedom of the press was curbed, attempts were made to control the courts and the voice of Parliament was suppressed. Referring to the 42nd Constitutional Amendment, he said that this is a big example of that period, where an attempt was made to change the basic structure of the Constitution for the selfishness of governance.
The Prime Minister wrote, “No Indian will ever forget the day when the soul of our Constitution was crushed, the voice of Parliament was suppressed and attempts were made to control the courts. During this time, the poor, backward and Dalit class people were especially targeted, their dignity was hurt.”
An indelible example of struggle and sacrifice
Remembering this day, the Prime Minister paid tribute to thousands of political leaders, social workers, students and ordinary citizens who raised their voice against atrocities and endured the torture of jail to protect democracy. He said that this fight was not of any one party, but of those people from all over the country who rose above their ideology and gave priority to the protection of democracy.
Modi said, “These were the people who worked together to save the democratic spirit of India. They proved that standing up against the tyranny of power is also a great national duty. It was this collective struggle that forced the then government to restore democracy and hold new elections, in which they lost badly.”[Related-Posts]
Warning for the coming generations

The Prime Minister on this occasion appealed to the youth not to consider this day as just a date, but to remember it as a lesson that whenever the Constitution is tampered with, democracy will be in danger. He said that it is important for the coming generations to know that whenever there was an attempt to crush democracy, the people of the country have shown their strength and protected the Constitution and freedom.
He said that “Democracy is not just a system, it is the soul of India, and its protection is the collective responsibility of all of us.”This message of Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the 50th anniversary of the Emergency is not only a reminder of history but also a warning and inspiration for the times to come. It tells us that when the Constitution is put on hold, only aware and courageous citizens can save the flame of democracy from being extinguished. This day reminds us of the countless heroes who did not let the spirit of India die even behind prison bars.
